A suspicious package found earlier today at the German Finance Ministry in Berlin on Wednesday contained explosives, police said, adding that the item was found in an area where mail is processed Reuters reports.
"The first investigation results show that the package contained a so-called explosives mixture, which is frequently used to produce pyrotechnics.
It was designed to cause considerable injuries when the package was opened," police said in a statement quoted by Reuters.A spokeswoman for the ministry declined to comment, saying an investigation was underway.
While it is unclear who is responsible for the deadly package, earlier today Bild reported that German finance minister Wolfgan Schauble told reported that Germany had stopped the planned aid package for Turkey because of the jailed German-Turkish reporter Deniz Yucel. Schaeuble also said that Turkey had to ensure the conditions were in place to enable it to talk about receiving financial aid but added the current situation was lamentable.
Asked if Germany would stick by its initial offer to look into a Turkish request for economic aid, Schaeuble was quoted by Reuters as telling reporters: "The answer is yes. But of course Turkey must keep to or recreate the conditions (needed) as at the moment it is really largely (a situation) that makes you cry."
